Home Dashboard

2009

My Senior Thesis at RISD focused on reducing energy consumption in our homes. In order to reduce first we need to understand our current usage. Just like how a modern car displays it’s energy usage on the dashboard, my design represents a dashboard for the home. Careful consideration was spent on the visual language. A color scale easily lets the owner understand if they are using more or less energy than their usual consumption. Most energy in the home is used on space heating, lighting, and electrical appliances. The dashboard is designed to replace a standard thermostat, and joining it is a new design for a light switch and an outlet to assist in locating where the energy consumed.
